You are reading: Casambi – Bluetooth Lighting Control

Casambi is a wireless advanced lighting control solution based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Bluetooth Low Energy is the wireless technology in modern smartphones and tablets, making it the mainstream and future proof low power radio technology in the world.

Bluetooth Mesh lighting control

Casambi is the best known commercial wireless lighting control company, Casambi is a technology company (privately owned from Finland) it is not a “protocol” unlike Dali which is an open protocol. This is called proprietary technology. The heart of the technology is the Casambi radio chip which operates on the 2.4GHZ open radio spectrum. The language spoken on this spectrum is Bluetooth but it is a different dialogue to the Bluetooth your phone uses for you car hands free. Basically Casambi Bluetooth talks other Casambi Bluetooth and other Bluetooth systems can’t understand what they are talking about … a Geordie talking to a Londoner …. As Casambi is a wireless radio environmental factors like solid brick walls effect the radio signal.

Communication is a “mesh” going though other Casambi devices to find the exact device you want to control. Unlike WIFI there is no router,  so no point of failure, the communication will take any path to deliver the instruction to the exact device you want to control. Therefore all devices are permanently turned on even if the “lamp” is off, this is called standby. Casambi is scalable from a room to complete buildings and campus, it can be used internally and externally

Casambi is a sophisticated control system, small installations can be completed reasonably easily but in most applications a systems integrator will be required to save set up time and commissioning.  The range of products that are Casambi enabled is large and growing strongly, including applications not directly related to lighting eg. blind control.

Tuneable white

Casambi offers a comprehensive colour controlling possibility. A user can change the colour temperature from the app including location based human centric lighting.

Calendar & Timer

With the calendar and timer functionality scenes and animations can be turned on and off based on a convenient time, date or certain weekdays to fit users’ needs, seasons and different activities.

Light Colour RGB and RGBW

Casambi offers a comprehensive colour controlling possibility. A user can change the colour in a simple manner from the app.

Scenes

Different lighting situations for different occasions can be created. Control multiple luminaires with one tap to create the perfect ambience for different occasions and needs.

Casambi Enabled LED Drivers

Constant current or constant voltage (strip lighting) LED drivers. The Casambi driver is permanently 240v powered and awaits a Casambi instruction to ”wake up / dim up and down” Easy installation, provides control over a single fixture but expensive as every driver requires a Casambi enabled driver. Most drivers will dim 100-1% and “off”.

Many manufactures have drivers with built in Casambi radios, the exception is EldoLED which sell an external radio that plugs into their drivers. This generally gives a stronger radio signal and the choice if you want EldoLED excellent dim to dark dimming performance.

Casambi Controllers

Casambi enabled “controllers” receive the wireless signal and output to other devices. Excellent example is the Tridonic BasicDim Wireless SR, Casambi to Dali Broadcast controller, this is 240v powered and outputs a Dali broadcast to the connected standard Dali drivers up to 25. Example is a kitchen with 6 downlights wired together in one circuit, rather than 6 Casambi enabled drivers the one controller tells the 6 standard Dali drivers to turn on/off up/down… Cheaper and simpler to commission but control is the group of 6 not 6 individuals.

Controller’s can output to standard drivers – phase dim, Dali, 1-10v. High capacity relay controllers can switch loads on/off.

Casambi controllers can add Casambi to an existing Dali network or can be stand alone systems.

Casambi Sensors

Casambi enabled sensors detect movement and output a signal to active lights, fans, blinds etc. Sensor can be 240v or battery powered. The CP electronics is the pick of 240v sensors as it outputs Casambi, Dali broadcast and has a 10amp switching relay. This could be used in a bathroom to turn on Casambi enable lights (or Dali enabled) and switch the fan.
