Illuminating a Vision for Sustainable Innovation
Arup’s new workplace in Perth’s first hybrid timber office tower, embodies the firm’s vision of ‘Sustainable development is everything.’ Designed through a regenerative-fit-out approach aligned with the Living Building Challenge, the space prioritises environmental responsibility and occupant wellbeing. Core principles include biophilic design, non-toxic and reused materials, such as salvaged cable trays and storm-felled timber, and abundant natural light, all reinforcing Arup’s net-zero-by-2030 commitment.
A standout feature of the space is the central void, created by removing a section of the Cross-Laminated Timber floor, visually and physically connecting levels. The CLT and removed beams were reused, reinstated as raised platforms, and a storytelling window, highlighting the firm’s focus on material reuse and transparency. The void is anchored by a sculptural staircase, supported by a tension-inspired steel column split to fit inside the building’s lift, reducing steel usage and enabling a prefabricated CLT stair system.
Art, culture, and community are integral to the design. Arup collaborated with interior designers Hames Sharley & Noongar artist Peter Farmer Designs to weave First Nations narratives, language, and cultural meaning throughout the workplace. The interior design of Arup’s workplace was guided by a clear and uncompromising commitment to sustainability and wellbeing. Working towards both the Living Building Challenge and achieving WELL Platinum certification, the design team embedded regenerative and people-focused principles into every aspect of the fit-out. The result is a workplace that not only supports the health and performance of its occupants, but also reflects Arup’s broader mission to contribute positively to the environment.
Material selections were approached with both rigour and creativity, prioritising local sourcing, recycled content, and circular economy principles. The use of reclaimed timbers, alongside refurbished furniture and salvaged construction materials, reinforces a strong sense of authenticity and purpose. Beyond environmental outcomes, the space is designed to foster a deep connection to country and culture, honouring place and heritage while creating space for future stories to unfold.
MLP contributed to the Arup workplace through carefully considered lighting that aligns with the project’s sustainability goals and design intent. Orluna Circluar products were chosen for a majority of the fittings, renowned for their exceptional light quality, low environmental impact, and circular design principles, MLP ensured the lighting scheme supported both visual comfort and environmental responsibility. These fittings not only enhanced the architectural features and material palette but also contributed to the project’s WELL Platinum certification by promoting occupant wellbeing through high-quality, human-centric illumination.
