Prefecture 48: Where heritage meets contemporary Japanese design
Prefecture 48 is a six-in-one Japanese hub located in a heritage-listed building on Sussex Street in Sydney. The site, a former storage facility, is split into two sections by a central courtyard. The concept draws inspiration from Japan’s 47 prefectures, creating an unofficial “48th” through its cultural and culinary offerings. Within Prefecture 48, you’ll find four restaurants, a patisserie, and a whisky bar.
Much of the lighting is focused on highlighting the layered textures of the heritage structure and the contemporary additions, while keeping the spotlight on the true stars: the chefs and their culinary creations. The lighting acts as a visual extension of Japanese cuisine—thoughtfully choreographed to echo its refined yet understated presentation. It’s an interplay of textures, spices, flavors, and aromas, translated into a feast for the eyes. The design achieves balance amidst complexity, with every element working in harmony.
Luminaire selection was crucial to bringing this project to life. MLP collaborated with lighting designers Electrolight to develop some custom fixtures that carefully aligned with their overall vision. Lightgraphix uplighting was essential for emphasising the heritage features, while custom luminaires were designed for unique applications throughout the venue. For instance, Electrolight created a concept for some track-mounted uplighter’s which MLP constructed from bespoke CNC-machined components. The fixtures were powder-coated and assembled with Bridgelux LEDs and a diffuser providing soft indirect light throughout the venue. Another standout feature is the custom heat lamp array above the servery—a five-meter-long installation with seven “heat lamp cannons,” meticulously machined and finished through chemical blackening. Additionally, ADesignStudio fittings are strategically placed throughout the venue, contributing to its distinctive atmosphere.
